Ikogosi Marathon organisers bar Sowore from 2026 race
Organisers of the Ikogosi Marathon have barred African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore from participating in the 2026 edition, citing security concerns and alleged misconduct.
According to PM NEWS, the Ikogosi Marathon Initiative announced the decision in a statement dated October 31, ahead of Saturday’s 17.5-kilometre race. Newswatch (Nigeria)
The organisers confirmed that Sowore registered but was neither issued a race bib nor cleared to participate. They insisted the exclusion was based on documented conduct and security considerations, not his political affiliation.
“The Ikogosi Marathon remains open to participants from all backgrounds who comply with our rules and uphold peaceful sporting engagement,” the organisers said.
They added that Sowore’s eligibility for future editions would undergo further review.
The decision follows a recent confrontation involving Sowore in Ekiti State, which police said was under investigation.
However, the organisers did not disclose specific details of the alleged conduct prompting his exclusion.
