Manchester United supporters staged a protest against the club’s ownership by throwing tennis balls onto the pitch during Tuesday’s Champions League encounter against AS Roma at Old Trafford.

According to ESPN, the demonstration had been planned and advertised on social media earlier in the day, with supporters targeting the 21st minute to mark 21 years of the Glazer family’s ownership.

However, the protest began earlier as United fell 2-0 behind inside the opening 18 minutes. A small number of tennis balls were thrown from the Stretford End, briefly interrupting play before players cleared them.

The Glazers have remained unpopular among supporters since their leveraged takeover in 2005, while minority owner Jim Ratcliffe has also faced criticism over increased ticket prices and the club’s poor performances.

United entered the contest on a nine-game winless run and were 17th in the Premier League. Matías Soulé and Donyell Malen scored for Roma before Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot.
