Arsenal’s Bruno Guimaraes penalty call declared wrong by KMI panel
Arsenal should have been awarded a late penalty in their 1-0 Premier League victory over Aston Villa, according to the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel, as reported by Football London. The panel ruled that Ian Maatsen’s challenge on Bruno Guimaraes was reckless after making clear contact with the midfielder’s standing leg without touching the ball.
Five members unanimously agreed the decision not to award a spot-kick was incorrect and represented a clear and obvious error that should have prompted VAR intervention. The panel also concluded that Maatsen deserved a second yellow card for the challenge, meaning Arsenal were denied both a penalty and a potential numerical advantage late in the match.
