The President of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria, Professor Oladapo Ashiru, has urged Nigerians to avoid kissing, hugging and handshaking following the confirmation of an Ebola case in Abuja.

According to Daily Post, Ashiru gave the warning on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television.

“Ebola is not airborne. But avoid kisses, hugs and handshakes,” Ashiru said.

He explained that the virus spreads primarily through direct contact with the blood and bodily fluids of infected individuals showing symptoms.

Ashiru also advised Nigerians to maintain physical distancing, practise strict personal hygiene and observe infection prevention measures.

He called for immediate nationwide activation of high-alert protocols, including enhanced screening at airports, seaports and land borders.

The warning follows Tuesday’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case involving a woman who arrived from Uganda.

The Federal Ministry of Health disclosed that the patient developed symptoms on October 7 and tested positive on October 20, with 44 contacts identified.
