Elon Musk, Sam Altman back Anthropic’s CEO on call to ‘slow down’ AI development
Tech rivals Elon Musk and Sam Altman both publicly endorsed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call to slow AI development, shortly after he warned the industry that unchecked progress could lead to “catastrophic damage,” according to Mediaite.
Musk reshared Amodei’s statement on X, writing simply, “Dario is right,” while Altman followed with a post saying he agreed the industry needed to “pace the frontier,” pledging OpenAI would also give independent evaluators “employee-like access” to its systems.
The rare alignment between Musk and Altman — who have feuded publicly for years, including a 2024 lawsuit Musk lost in May — comes amid mounting scrutiny of AI risks. Musk has previously testified he feared a “Terminator outcome” from unregulated AI, estimating a 10-20% chance the technology could wipe out humanity.
The support follows warnings from a former Anthropic researcher that AI could “kill us all by the end of the decade,” and a former OpenAI researcher’s similar remarks to Joe Rogan.
