EU tightens rules on ChatGPT, Reddit, Roblox over systemic risks

The European Union has placed ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox under its strictest regulatory regime for online services.

According to Tribune Online, citing Politico, the European Commission designated ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine, while Reddit and Roblox were classified as Very Large Online Platforms under the Digital Services Act.

The designations mean the companies now face direct EU supervision and must tackle systemic risks around children’s safety, election integrity and public security, or risk fines of up to 6% of their global annual revenue.

However, the rules only apply to services with over 45 million EU users, bringing the total number of covered platforms to 28.

OpenAI said it was preparing to meet the new requirements, while Roblox welcomed the designation, insisting safety remained central to its operations.
