Factories abandon DisCos as alternative power spending soars to N1.34tn
Nigerian manufacturers spent N1.34 trillion on alternative electricity sources in 2025, reflecting the growing impact of unreliable grid power on industrial operations.
According to exclusive data from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria obtained by The PUNCH, the expenditure rose by 21 per cent from N1.11 trillion in 2024.
MAN said average daily electricity supply fell from 16.7 hours in the first half of 2025 to 13.1 hours in the second half. Consequently, several manufacturers have increasingly turned to gas and low-pour fuel oil generators to sustain production. Companies reported to have reduced reliance on DisCos include Dangote, Flour Mills, Nigerian Breweries, Nestlé and Guinness Nigeria.
