FG criticises ICC for accepting unverified case against Nigeria

The Federal Government has faulted the International Criminal Court for accepting an anonymous filing seeking an investigation into kidnappings in Nigeria as crimes against humanity.

According to The Nation, Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi said the ICC improperly assigned the unverified filing to Pre-Trial Chamber II without first determining its competence or legal basis.

The chamber dismissed the request on September 1, ruling it was not properly before the court.

Fagbemi said the initial processing bypassed established procedures and could undermine its integrity. He stressed that no ICC investigation has been opened against Nigeria and no adverse finding made.
