Google chooses Finland for biggest single European investment
Google will invest €13bn ($15bn) in Finland’s AI infrastructure, its largest single investment in Europe, according to BBC. The package will fund three new data centres, expand an existing site, and support energy projects to meet growing AI demand. As part of the deal, Google signed a 22-year contract with Finnish utility Fortum to buy up to 50% of output from the Loviisa nuclear power plant.
Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the move, calling it a testament to the country’s AI infrastructure leadership. The investment is expected to support over 37,000 jobs during construction and boost Finland’s GDP by €3.6bn annually. New facilities will be built in Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala, with an existing Hamina site expanded. Construction is scheduled for 2027 and 2028.
