Green card holder sues Trump administration over 18-month US citizenship delay
A Taiwanese national living in Ohio has sued the Trump administration over delays in processing his United States citizenship application, alleging unreasonable administrative inaction.
Meng Ju Liu, also known as Michael Liu, filed the lawsuit on October 15 at the US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.
According to court filings described in the report by Newsweek, Liu accused US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) of leaving his application “gathering dust on an office shelf”.
He argued that without judicial intervention, he could wait “an eternity” for his application to be processed.
Liu, a lawful permanent resident since 2002, submitted his naturalisation application on April 25, 2025.
However, approximately 18 months later, he had reportedly not received an invitation for an interview.
He cited USCIS figures showing that 80 percent of naturalisation applications in Cincinnati were processed within 9.5 months.
Liu is seeking a federal court order compelling immigration officials to process his application without further unreasonable delay.
