Gunmen kill APC chairman in highway ambush, abduct one
Gunmen have killed the APC Chairman of Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another occupant of his vehicle in an ambush along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area on Thursday evening.
Kogi State Police spokesperson ASP Afusat Saliu confirmed the attack in a statement on Friday, as reported by Vanguard, saying armed assailants emerged from surrounding bush at approximately 5pm and opened fire on motorists. Yunusa’s blue Toyota Corolla, registration number GWA 636 CH, was found abandoned with the chairman dead inside.
The abducted occupant remains missing as security agencies comb surrounding forests. Yunusa’s remains have been evacuated to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy.
The killing comes days after 15 NYSC corps members were kidnapped on the same Kogi highway corridor, deepening concerns about security along the state’s major routes. The Commissioner of Police has ordered sustained operations along the affected corridor.
