Harry Kane honored with Ballon d’Or ahead of Der Klassiker as Atletico claim LaLiga summit

Atletico Madrid briefly moved to the summit of La Liga following a 2-0 victory over Levante during an action-packed Saturday in European football, according to a report by ABC News.​

Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring in the 36th minute after capitalising on a Levante defensive mistake, before Giuliano Simeone rounded off a team move to seal the win.

The victory pushed Atletico one point ahead of Barcelona prior to their fixture against Alaves. Players wore black armbands as Spain mourned a deadly train collision.​

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich celebrated Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or triumph prior to their Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund, where the striker addressed supporters, stating:

“The support you’ve shown me since I arrived has been incredible.” Meanwhile, Manchester City suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Brighton, and Manchester United’s winless streak stretched to nine matches after a 2-0 loss at Chelsea.
