Inside Canada’s growing boycott of US goods

Share:

Canadians are overhauling their spending habits in a widespread boycott of US goods and services, from tech to whisky to air travel, according to a Guardian report featuring responses from over 3,500 people.

The boycott intensified this week after the US imposed 50% tariffs on $20bn of Canadian goods, with PM Mark Carney vowing to retaliate “dollar for dollar.” Trump responded by ordering Lake Ontario renamed “Lake America.”

Respondents described switching to Canadian groceries, alcohol and tech, avoiding US streaming platforms and airlines, and using apps like CanMade and Buy Beaver to track product origins. A July Angus Reid survey found 40% of shoppers now check where goods are made.
