Lord Briggs to succeed Reed as UK Supreme Court chief

Lord Briggs of Westbourne has been appointed the next President of the UK Supreme Court, succeeding Lord Reed when he retires in January 2027.

Punch reports that the appointment, approved by King Charles III on the advice of the Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, followed a recommendation from an independent selection commission, making Briggs the fifth president since the court’s establishment in 2009.

A Justice of the Supreme Court since October 2017, Briggs previously oversaw the extensive Lehman insolvency litigation and led major reforms of England and Wales’ civil justice system, including the 2015-2016 Civil Courts Structure Review.

He was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in 2013 and later served as Deputy Head of Civil Justice from January 2016.
