Manchester United are reportedly considering alternatives to Michael Carrick after Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como 1907 intensified pressure on the head coach. According to the Daily Star, a five-man shortlist has emerged, featuring Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann, Unai Emery and Fabian Hurzeler.

However, the BBC reports that Carrick is continuing his duties as normal and has not been informed of any imminent change. The defeat was followed by captain Bruno Fernandes questioning aspects of Carrick’s tactics, adding to concerns after Lisandro Martinez’s recent criticism of the club’s leadership.

Carrick admitted his team’s performance was unacceptable, saying: “It’s not about playing for me, it’s about playing for this football club.” He added: “I’m giving my best, absolute best all the time, I care about it. My whole life’s wrapped around it. I genuinely give everything that I possibly can.”

United are preparing for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, with Nagelsmann reportedly emerging as a leading potential replacement.
