Military keeps mum on alleged FG-Boko Haram secret ceasefire deal
The Defence Headquarters has declined to comment on allegations that the Federal Government struck a secret ceasefire deal with Boko Haram in June, according to a report by The Guardian.
The New Humanitarian had alleged the ceasefire followed negotiations over the release of 360 civilians abducted in Ngoshe, Borno State, and involved a ₦5 billion ransom payment, which the Federal Government has denied. Citing three sources with Boko Haram contacts, the report said attacks reduced in some communities around Ngoshe after the alleged agreement took effect.
When contacted, Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Mike Onoja, declined to comment. The insurgency, which began in Borno State in 2009, has killed thousands and displaced millions.
