Nigeria moves to become Africa’s regional investment hub through depositary receipts
Nigeria is seeking to strengthen its position as a regional financial hub by developing a framework that would make it easier for investors across Africa to trade securities across national borders.
According to Bloomberg, the initiative aims to attract companies and investors from other African countries by facilitating cross-border listings through depositary receipts.
The move comes as Nigerian authorities seek to deepen the country’s capital market, attract foreign investment and improve access to financing for businesses.
The framework could help reduce barriers that have historically complicated investment across Africa, where differing regulations and market infrastructure often limit cross-border transactions.
Nigeria’s efforts also coincide with growing interest in regional investment opportunities linked to major transactions, including the initial public offering of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
The initiative could strengthen cooperation between African stock exchanges, broaden investment opportunities and improve the flow of capital across the continent.
However, successful implementation will depend on regulatory coordination, investor confidence and the ability of participating markets to establish efficient trading and settlement systems.
