Nigerians react as global ride-hailing giant Uber quits
Nigerians have reacted sharply to Uber’s sudden exit from Nigeria after 12 years of operations, with drivers, analysts, former lawmakers and social commentators offering varied explanations for the departure of the global e-hailing giant from Africa’s largest market, as reported by DAILY POST.
The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters condemned Uber’s exit as a consequence of its “exploitative foundational business model,” while investment analyst Bolaji Fasomade argued the company “couldn’t innovate and compete effectively.”
Several commentators blamed drivers’ widespread practice of taking passengers offline to avoid commission payments, while former Senator Shehu Sani saw opportunity: “A good chance for our local startups to take over the business.”
Bolt and inDrive have pledged to remain in Nigeria’s $450 million ride-hailing market.
