US backs OpenAI in New York Times copyright lawsuit
US President Donald Trump’s administration has sided with OpenAI in a copyright lawsuit brought by the New York Times, according to a Punch report citing a court document filed Tuesday. The Justice Department argued that AI training benefits outweigh competitive harm, calling the Times’ position an “anti-competitive entry barrier.”
Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward said AI dominance is critical to national security. The Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft in 2023 over alleged unauthorised use of its articles for training. A Times spokesman accused the administration of favouring “trillion-dollar AI companies” over American creators.
