Nigeria’s weekly cyberattacks hit 4,906 as threats climb 45%
Nigerian organisations recorded an average of 4,906 cyberattacks per week in August 2026, a 45% year-on-year rise, according to the latest Nairametrics report by Check Point Research. The figure was more than double the global average of 2,422 weekly attacks and second only to Angola’s 5,416 among African countries surveyed.
Kenya recorded 3,658 attacks, up 6%, while South Africa’s 2,086 marked a 3% decline. Check Point identified energy and utilities as Africa’s most targeted sector, followed by financial services and government institutions. Regional director Lorna Hardie called the trend a “red flag” for national economies. Ransomware attacks nearly doubled globally, with Qilin the most active group in August.
