Peter Obi’s NDC is pulling APC members away—and Kano is the latest proof
The All Progressives Congress has suffered a fresh pre-election blow as hundreds of its members in Kano State formally decamped to the Nigerian Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to Daily Post.
The defectors — described as mostly youths — were received into the NDC in Kumbotso Local Government Area by the party’s Kano State Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Yusuf Rabiu Fasaha, alongside Captain Nafe, the NDC’s candidate for the Kumbotso State House of Assembly seat.
Speaking at the event, Fasaha described the mass defection as a clear indication of the NDC’s rapidly growing acceptance among young Nigerians. He assured the new entrants of equal opportunities and inclusion in the party’s structure going forward.
The Kano defections follow Peter Obi and former Kano Governor Musa Kwankwaso’s formal entry into the NDC in May 2026, which has significantly boosted the party’s national profile and grassroots appeal. Several House of Representatives members have also defected to the NDC since then.
APC’s Kano State structure has faced internal strains in recent months, with the party receiving over 700 petitions from aggrieved members over its candidate selection process ahead of 2027.
