Reps panel presses DisCos to settle outstanding debts

The House of Representatives Committee on Power has urged electricity distribution companies with outstanding market obligations to urgently settle their debts, warning that improved liquidity is critical to the power sector’s sustainability.

As reported by Punch, Committee Chairman Nwokolo Onyemaechi issued the call in a statement Thursday, naming BEDC, EEDC, IBEDC, JEDC, KAEDCO, PHEDC and KEDCO as affected DisCos.

The statement followed a public hearing on IBEDC’s obligations, chaired by NISO’s Edmond Eje.

However, Onyemaechi warned that prolonged non-payment could threaten market liquidity, urging the companies to strengthen compliance.

NISO’s CEO, Abdu Mohammed, later briefed lawmakers on the agency’s five-year development plan during a separate oversight session.
