Tinubu may stay away from UNGA amid US records controversy, planned protest – Report

President Bola Tinubu may skip the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, with Vice President Kashim Shettima expected to represent Nigeria, according to The Whistler.

A security source reportedly said Tinubu cancelled his planned September 22–28 trip following intelligence about protests by Nigerians in the US over efforts to obtain records concerning his activities in Chicago in the 1990s.

The development comes amid a legal battle involving lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York, engaged by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to pursue the release of FBI, DOJ and DEA records.

The firm has also alleged a $3m bribery attempt involving persons linked to Tinubu, while its managing partner, Karl Von Batten, was appointed to a White House presidential commission by US President Donald Trump.
