Trump promises $5,000 ‘dividend’ to Americans if Republicans win midterms
US President Donald Trump has promised to give every American adult $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November midterm elections, in a major campaign pledge aimed at boosting support for his party.
According to Sky News, Trump announced the proposed payment during the Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, Texas. He described the proposed payment as a “Trump Dividend”, presenting it as a reward linked to what he described as the administration’s economic success.
Trump’s announcement immediately raised questions about how the proposed payments would be funded and whether the president has the authority to implement them. Sky News reported that the White House had not provided clarity on the financing of the pledge, while economists and critics questioned its feasibility.
The scale of the proposal is substantial. With about 270 million American adults, the payments could cost approximately $1.35 trillion, according to Reuters. The Associated Press reported that the plan would require congressional approval and could add significantly to the country’s already large budget deficit.
Trump, however, presented the proposal as part of his effort to persuade voters to support Republican candidates. His announcement came as Republicans prepare for a difficult midterm battle, with control of both chambers of Congress at stake.
Vice President JD Vance subsequently appeared to qualify the proposal, suggesting that wealthier Americans might not receive the payment. He also indicated that tariff revenues could potentially be used to finance the dividend. However, the Associated Press reported that the amount proposed would far exceed existing tariff revenue.
The pledge has also attracted criticism from economists. Sky News reported economist Peter Schiff accused Trump of attempting to influence the election through the promise, while Trump’s supporters have portrayed the proposal as a form of economic dividend.
Trump’s announcement comes amid voter concerns about the cost of living, with Sky News reporting that rising prices remain a major concern for Americans. The president has sought to make economic issues central to his midterm message while urging voters to keep Republicans in power.
The proposal is therefore likely to become a major issue in the campaign, particularly as Republicans seek to maintain their congressional majorities and Democrats challenge Trump’s economic record.
