America’s longest-serving Senate party leader McConnell leaves rehab
US Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, has been discharged from a rehabilitation centre and will continue recovery at home following a fall and mild pneumonia that hospitalised him in mid-June, he confirmed in a statement Thursday.
The Kentucky Republican — the longest-serving Senate party leader in US history — said he would maintain “an intensive regimen of physical therapy” and continue engaging with colleagues on Senate business from home.
According to the BBC, McConnell was briefly unconscious after his fall, he revealed on July 12. A polio survivor who has faced multiple health challenges in recent years, McConnell has confirmed he will retire in January at the end of his Senate term.
