UK AI ambitions suffer setback as Microsoft quits data centre deal

Microsoft has withdrawn from a major artificial intelligence data centre agreement in the United Kingdom, dealing a setback to Britain’s ambitions of becoming a global AI powerhouse.

According to Channels Television, the American technology giant confirmed its withdrawal on Monday from a planned facility in Loughton, northeast of London.

Microsoft had agreed to lease computing capacity from British AI infrastructure company Nscale, which is backed by Nvidia.

A Microsoft spokesperson said “this decision relates to a single site”, adding that the company remains “committed to our partnership with Nscale”.

The project has faced electricity supply challenges, with reports suggesting grid connections might not become available until the 2030s.

Nscale maintained that it remained committed to developing the facility.

“Our relationship with Microsoft remains strong and long-term, and this unfortunate London-wide grid issue has no impact on our other contracts,” the company stated.

The withdrawal highlights growing infrastructure challenges facing Britain’s expanding artificial intelligence industry.
