The confusion over Ilhan Omar’s real name… what we know and don’t know
US court filing identifies Ilhan Omar as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi
Federal prosecutors’ reference to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” in a court filing has raised fresh questions about her identity, according to Fox News Digital and the New York Post.
The filing
The October 21 motion, from DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office, asks a judge to keep the search warrant for Omar’s Washington home sealed because it hasn’t been fully executed. Several outlets, including The New York Times, have asked for it to be unsealed. Prosecutors did not explain why the second name appears.
The claim
Fox, citing two sources familiar with the investigation, including a law enforcement official, reported that Ilhan Nur Said Elmi is Omar’s birth name. The Post cited a source who said Omar is not her birth surname and that she was born with the surname Elmi. That is also the surname of her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom she married in 2009 and divorced in 2017, and who has long been rumored to be her brother. Attorney General Todd Blanche told the Post, “I don’t think AUSAs would make up names.”
Omar’s response
Her spokesperson told Fox: “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name.” The office says she has repeatedly denied the marriage allegation. In a Wednesday interview with MS NOW’s Chris Hayes, Omar called the claims “insane,” but when asked if she is related to Elmi, she answered: “Not to my knowledge.”
Why it matters
Former immigration judge Nathan Hansen told Fox that if she used an alias, many government forms, from student aid to passports, could be called into question. The Post reported that prosecutors are looking at conduct within a 10-year statute of limitations, including any alternative name or wrong birth date. Omar says her birth certificate was destroyed. Her father naturalized in 2000, which would make her 17 at the time, but the Post says her birth date in Minnesota’s legislative library showed her as at least 18 until staff changed it in 2019.
The investigation so far
Agents searched her home on October 12, taking her phone, computers and passport. Fox reported that investigators also obtained her DNA and questioned her sister, Sahra Noor. Omar says the probe is political harassment by the Trump administration.
What we don’t know
The “a/k/a” doesn’t by itself establish her birth name or prove fraud. The sources are anonymous, and the filing doesn’t explain the name. Omar hasn’t been charged, and the materials are only allegations.
