Iran plotting attacks against Americans in Europe, Middle East — US intelligence warns
United States intelligence officials have warned that Iran is allegedly planning advanced attacks against American citizens and diplomatic personnel across the Middle East and other countries, including Europe.
According to The New York Times, as reported by Daily Star, intelligence officials alerted Secretary of State Marco Rubio to growing threats against Americans overseas.
A memorandum from Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton warned that Iran had “received intelligence that Iran has substantially increased efforts to target U.S. personnel.”
“The lethal plotting efforts by the Iranians against U.S. citizens have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries,” the memo stated.
The warning prompted Washington to reduce embassy staffing in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Non-essential American personnel and their families were ordered to leave Saudi Arabia earlier.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards threatened attacks on US military bases over American naval escorts through the Strait of Hormuz.
The escalating tensions have heightened regional security concerns.
