Füllkrug historic double powers Werder Bremen past Mainz in five-goal thriller
Niclas Füllkrug scored a clinical first-half penalty double to propel Werder Bremen to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mainz, keeping their six-game unbeaten streak alive.
According to Bundesliga.com, the 33-year-old striker’s composure from the spot took his tally to eight goals in seven league games, matching club legends Miroslav Klose and Rudi Völler.
Füllkrug converted penalties in the 7th and 25th minutes, while Ludovit Reis added a third after the break to seal the victory and leapfrog Bremen into sixth place.
Bremen’s manager was full of praise for the talismanic forward following his match-winning display.
“He ignites the team, he drives the team forward,” beamed Daniel Thioune. “He is exemplary in all his actions on and off the pitch. He is a jackpot for us as a club and for us as a team. He leads by example, as he did again today.”
