AFCON set for return to two-year cycle as CAF prepares to confirm decision
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is expected to return to a two-year cycle, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee reportedly set to confirm the decision.
According to Foot Africa, journalist Micky Jnr revealed that the announcement could come at the committee’s meeting on Thursday, October 29, following consultations with CAF’s 54 member associations.
“🚨 𝐄𝐗𝐂𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐕𝐄: AFCON is set to return to a 𝐭𝐰𝐨-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞, with the decision expected to be confirmed at tomorrow’s CAF Executive Committee meeting,” Micky Jnr wrote on October 28.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe had previously indicated on October 9 that the tournament’s frequency was under review. The proposed reversal would abandon the four-year format previously planned for future editions.
CAF launched bidding for the 2028, 2032 and 2036 tournaments in July. However, official confirmation remains outstanding, while AFCON 2027 is still scheduled to take place in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The governing body is yet to clarify how any change would affect subsequent editions.
