Enugu: Outrage as Catholic, Anglican bishops allegedly join APC campaign council
Controversy has erupted in Enugu State following allegations that two prominent Catholic and Anglican bishops were included in the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to SaharaReporters, a document bearing the party’s logo listed Catholic Bishop Ernest Obodo as director of its Faith-Based (Christians) Directorate and Anglican Bishop Ikechukwu Egbuonu as a member.
The reported appointments sparked criticism among worshippers concerned about religious neutrality.
A group identifying itself as Concerned Anglican Faithful petitioned the Primate of All Nigeria, Henry Ndukuba, demanding Egbuonu’s withdrawal.
“It is a matter of profound scandal that a Father in God, consecrated to shepherd souls across all political divides, would allow his revered office to be enlisted into a partisan political campaign machinery,” the petition reads.
The petitioners also demanded restrictions on clergy accepting political appointments.
Catholic faithful similarly called for clarification regarding Obodo’s reported involvement.
Neither bishop’s acceptance of the alleged appointment has been independently confirmed.
