From marriage certificate to living with ‘dirty dandy’: The alleged evidence of Ilhan Omar’s sham marriage to brother
United States Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is facing renewed scrutiny over allegations that she entered a fraudulent marriage with her alleged brother, Ahmed Elmi, to facilitate immigration benefits.
According to the New York Post, three issues have intensified speculation surrounding the Minnesota Democrat’s previous marriage.
1. Marriage certificate: A British marriage document reportedly identifies Omar’s father’s alternative name, Nur Said Elmi, raising questions about possible family connections.
2. Living arrangements: Omar legally married Elmi in 2009 but reportedly maintained ties with Ahmed Hirsi, with whom she had a child in 2012. Joint tax filings also attracted scrutiny.
3. Community leader’s claims: A Somali blogger alleged that Omar previously introduced Elmi as her brother and suggested he sought immigration documents.
Omar has repeatedly denied marrying her brother or committing immigration fraud.
Asked whether she was related to Elmi, she responded, “not to my knowledge.”
The allegations remain unproven, and the reported documents do not conclusively establish a sibling relationship.
