Tinubu becomes first Nigerian president to receive proposed UN budget
President Bola Tinubu has received the proposed 2027 United Nations budget from Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim.
According to Daily Post, Ibrahim presented the seven-volume document to Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, describing the development as historic.
Ibrahim, who chairs the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Matters, said Nigeria was playing a significant role in the organisation’s budgeting process.
“This is the first time in 66 years that Nigeria will chair the Budget and Administrative Committee. It is the first time, and we do not know when it will happen again in history,” he said.
The envoy disclosed that approximately $3.4 billion was proposed for regular UN activities and $8.5 billion for peacekeeping operations.
He explained that the budget remained subject to negotiations, adjustments and final approval by member states.
Ibrahim also expressed optimism that Nigeria’s participation would strengthen its engagement with the international organisation.
