Russia releases US citizen Stephen Hubbard while Trump envoy meets Putin
Russia has released 74-year-old American citizen Stephen Hubbard, imprisoned for allegedly fighting alongside Ukrainian forces, following discussions between President Vladimir Putin and US envoy Steve Witkoff.
According to the BBC, Hubbard was transferred to Pulkovo Airport on Wednesday as Witkoff met Putin in St Petersburg.
President Donald Trump confirmed Hubbard was “on his way back home”, adding that “there was no ‘swap’ necessary”.
Hubbard, a former teacher from Michigan, was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison in 2024 after being accused of joining a Ukrainian defence unit.
Trump said the release followed a request he “made directly” to Putin last week.
He also defended suspending sanctions against Russia, arguing that negotiations could otherwise have collapsed.
Hubbard, reportedly experiencing health problems, is expected to receive treatment in Texas.
Meanwhile, Witkoff and Putin discussed Ukraine peace efforts, Russian diesel exports and economic cooperation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that the talks would produce meaningful progress towards ending the war.
