Barcelona, Atletico Madrid battle for Lisandro Martinez as Man Utd exit looms
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez could leave Old Trafford next summer, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid reportedly interested in signing the Argentine international.
According to a report by AS, as cited by LiveScore, Atletico Madrid have joined Barcelona in the race for the 28-year-old, whose contract with United expires in June 2027. Martinez joined United from Ajax in 2022 but has endured a difficult campaign, making costly defensive errors against Fulham and Tottenham.
His relationship with the club’s hierarchy also came under scrutiny after he publicly criticised Director of Football Jason Wilcox over the club’s transfer business. He subsequently apologised and received a fine.
Despite the public reconciliation, uncertainty remains over his future, with United reportedly considering activating a one-year contract extension to protect his transfer value.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone could offer Martinez an opportunity to reunite with fellow Argentine Cristian Romero. Meanwhile, Italian clubs Como, Inter Milan and Roma have also been mentioned as potential destinations should the defender leave Manchester United.
