South-West students develop apps to combat terrorism, banditry, internet scams
Public secondary school students across South-West Nigeria have developed digital applications to tackle kidnapping, banditry, internet fraud and other societal challenges.
According to Nigerian Tribune, the innovations were showcased Friday at the University of Ibadan during the second Byte Busters Coding Club Showcase.
Students of Aramoko District Commercial Secondary School emerged winners after developing the Safe Guardian App, designed to provide emergency assistance and share users’ locations with trusted contacts.
Team leader Johnny Pius explained:
“The Safe Guardian App is a personal safety companion that allows users to make quick responses when they find themselves in emergency situations. It is designed to enable users to share their live locations with their trusted contacts whenever they are in danger.”
Other projects included artificial intelligence-powered examination platforms, agricultural applications and Yoruba-English translation tools.
Project Director Professor Seun Kolade disclosed that over 4,500 students had benefited from the initiative.
He urged stakeholders to expand digital education opportunities across underserved communities.
