Lisandro Martinez branded a ‘liability’ after dismissal in Manchester United’s loss to Chelsea
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has stated that Lisandro Martinez should no longer represent Manchester United following his red card in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, according to the Daily Mirror.
The 28-year-old defender was sent off after receiving two rapid yellow cards, culminating in a penalty box foul on Wesley Fofana that allowed Cole Palmer to double Chelsea’s lead.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Murphy criticised the Argentina international’s conduct, stating:
“No, I wouldn’t, only because he looks like he has already gone. His head isn’t right. He is not going to be there long term, that is evident. You have to put the club first. Michael has got to make some big decisions. You can’t have a liability in your team.”
Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole echoed those sentiments on TNT Sports, adding: “In a Man United shirt, he’s just at the scene of the crime too often. Whatever the next Man United phase is, I think Martinez’s time at the club has run its course.”
Manager Michael Carrick refrained from directly criticizing Martinez after the match, noting: “I’ve not seen it back, so I don’t know if it was or not. It’s a big moment in the game.”
