Florian Wirtz responds to Jamie Carragher’s criticism after starring in win over Brighton

Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz has brushed off criticism over his performances following his £116.5 million move, after helping his team to victory against Brighton, as reported by GOAL.

Wirtz played a crucial role in Liverpool’s opener before being substituted in the 65th minute with an ankle issue. Addressing media criticism, including sharp remarks from Jamie Carragher, Wirtz joked:

“Maybe I’m just an interesting guy, you know?” He added: “No, I just play my football, and if people want to talk about me or judge me, that’s their job. I am not focusing on that. I just want to play football, and more, I cannot do.”

Reflecting on the match, Wirtz noted: “We had the right mentality today to go into this game. In the first half or first 30 minutes, we were on top of them and really good in the duels, creating a lot of chances. It’s good to end the half and we defended good. Really happy about that.”

“It’s really enjoyable. I think many things weren’t so good in the last month so I’m even happier that it’s going well at the moment. We are in a good way to get where we want to be. We should keep going like that and I’m happy about that.”

Carragher had previously stated: ”There is no way Wirtz should be playing ahead of Gravenberch. What Florian Wirtz is doing for Liverpool is not enough right now. He’s played 55, 60 games for Liverpool. He shouldn’t be in the Liverpool team right now. I don’t want to hammer Liverpool players. But we’re not saying this after five-ten games, we’re saying this after 50-60 games,”.

Regarding Wirtz’s injury, head coach Andoni Iraola confirmed:”Unfortunately, he had to leave the pitch with a small twist of the ankle. It doesn’t look very big but we are playing every three days so we need to see where he is,”
