The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a suspected counterfeit whisky production facility in Aba, Abia State, with products reportedly valued at over ₦500 million.

The discovery raises concerns about the circulation of potentially unsafe alcoholic beverages and the risks posed to unsuspecting consumers.

The operation forms part of the agency’s efforts to tackle counterfeit and substandard products in Nigeria’s food and beverage market.

According to SaharaReporters, officials discovered the facility at No. 25 Omenazu Street following intelligence about suspected illegal production.

NAFDAC said the suspected operator fled when enforcement officers arrived, abandoning packaging materials bearing the names Sir Edwards Scotch Whisky and Scottish Hills Whisky.

Investigators recovered empty bottles, sealing machines, bottle caps, cartons and drums containing approximately 200 litres of liquid.

Officials also found ethanol, tree bark soaked in ethanol and dirty sieves allegedly used during production.

The agency estimated the equipment and materials at over ₦500 million and urged residents to report suspected illegal manufacturing activities.

No arrests were confirmed.
